From Port to Pixie Dust: What to Expect on Embarkation Day
June 11, 2025 by Kristen Jordan

Planning a Disney Cruise and curious about what embarkation day is really like? Whether you’ve already booked your Disney Cruise Line vacation or you’re still dreaming of setting sail, knowing what to expect on that first day onboard can make all the difference. In this post, we’re sharing some of our favorite expert-approved tips to help you feel confident, prepared, and ready to start your Disney Cruise adventure the right way, without the stress!
Before You Travel
The anticipation is part of the fun! About 30 days before your cruise, Disney Cruise Line will send you luggage tags in the mail. These are color-coded for your ship and include important details like your name, stateroom number, and sail date. If you're flying, wait to attach these tags until after your flight, but be sure to have them on your bags before arriving at the port.
Be sure to complete your online check-in as soon as it opens (typically 30 days before your sail date). You'll select your Port Arrival Time, upload your travel documents, and be ready to go.
And don’t forget to download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app and update to the latest version prior to travel! It’s your go-to resource on board for dining, activities, entertainment schedules, and more.
Lastly, you’ll receive a health questionnaire via email on the morning of your sailing. This form must be completed prior to your port arrival, so keep an eye on your inbox.
Getting to the Port
Whether you're sailing from Port Canaveral, Port Everglades, or another departure point, make a travel plan that gets you there in time for your scheduled Port Arrival Time.
Many guests choose to arrive a day early and stay at a nearby hotel. Some local hotels offer complimentary shuttles to the port. Rideshare services like Uber or Lyft are also an option, and if you're driving, parking is typically available onsite (expect to pay around $100 for a 5-night cruise). Arrival at the Port
Once you arrive, the energy starts to build! Porters will be available to assist with your luggage—just make sure those Disney Cruise Line tags are attached. It’s customary to tip $1–$3 per bag.
Be sure to pack a carry-on day bag with your essential items, including travel documents like your passport (or other accepted ID) and port arrival form, any necessary medications, electronics and valuables you prefer to keep with you, and a swimsuit and sunscreen so you're ready to jump into the fun the moment you board.
A Disney cast member will check your documentation, verify that water bottles are empty, and direct you toward check-in. Once inside, you’ll go through security and check in with a Disney Cruise Line agent. You’ll confirm documents and MagicBand+ (if applicable), and then enter the terminal waiting area.
Take a breath, charge your phone, and get excited—you’re almost there!
Boarding the Ship
Boarding is done in groups based on your port arrival time. When it’s your turn, your family will be invited to enter through the iconic Mickey-shaped portal. This is where the magic begins!
As you step onboard, your family name will be announced and the crew will welcome you with cheers. It’s a moment you’ll never forget. Sometimes, even a special character friend will be there to greet you.

Making the Most of Embarkation Day
Once onboard, there are a few ways to ease into the fun right away. Start by heading to the buffet, either Marceline Market or Cabanas (depending on which ship you are on), or one of the main dining rooms for a relaxing sit down lunch with wait service.
This is also a great time to explore the ship! You can take a walk on the pool deck, peek into the kids' clubs (open house hours are typically only available on embarkation day).. If you're hoping to enjoy adult dining, a spa treatment, or a character experience, stop by guest services to confirm or modify any reservations. If you packed swimsuits in your day bag, you can hop right into the pool or try one of the water slides while the ship is still docked.
Around 1:30 to 2:00 PM, staterooms typically become available. Your luggage may arrive a little later, but your MagicBand+ or Key to the World card will be ready and waiting at your room.

Safety First: The Muster Drill
Participation in the muster drill is required for all guests and takes place before sailing. Check the Navigator app or your Key to the World card to find your station. The drill is quick and straightforward, and it's essential for your safety.
Time to Set Sail!
Don’t miss the Sail Away Celebration on the upper decks! With music, dancing, and appearances from Disney characters, it’s the perfect way to kick off your cruise. And yes, that magical horn really does play "When You Wish Upon a Star." We highly recommend heading straight to the Sail Away party right after your Muster Drill is complete to get a good spot. If you are able, take the stairs! The elevators will be overloaded at this time with everyone trying to get up to the main pool deck ASAP.
The first night of your cruise also includes a fabulous stage show in the Walt Disney Theatre, your first dinner with your assigned dining rotation, and plenty of character fun.
